When it comes to pool equipment, few innovations have reshaped the industry as much as variable speed pumps. They’ve cut energy costs, reduced strain on equipment, and helped pool owners embrace greener backyard living. Now, Pentair has taken things to the next level with the IntelliFlo3 VSF pump—a solution designed not only to move water efficiently but also to bring powerful automation and remote connectivity directly into the heart of the backyard.

To better understand what makes the IntelliFlo3 such a game-changer for both pool owners and service professionals, Pool Magazine sat down with Adam Key, Senior Product Manager for Pentair Pool Pumps. With more than 15 years at Pentair, much of it spent in new product development, Key has seen firsthand how pool technology has evolved—and why this latest generation pump is such a leap forward.

How IntelliFlo3 is Redefining Pool Automation

For decades, single-speed pumps controlled by mechanical time clocks were the industry standard. They kept water moving, but at a steep cost. “Those time clocks were the first and most primitive form of automation for pools,” Key explained. “Whenever that pump was on, it was running full blast, consuming a lot of electricity. That’s why we wanted time clocks—to cut costs and energy waste.”

Variable speed pumps introduced scheduling and energy savings, but they had one big flaw: the user interfaces were often clunky. “Usually that schedule’s not changed,” Key noted. “It’s really not much of an automation tool if you’re never updating it based on seasonal needs or bather load.”

That’s where IntelliFlo3 changes everything. By adding Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, Pentair gave users an intuitive mobile app to set, adjust, and monitor pump schedules anytime, anywhere. “You could be on vacation, see a storm coming at home, and increase the filtration cycle to keep your pool clear—all from your phone,” Key said. The result: a pump that adapts to real-life conditions instead of being locked into a static program.

Built-In Relays for Smarter Control

One of the IntelliFlo3’s biggest innovations is its built-in relays, allowing homeowners to control more than just water circulation. “It’s a two-in-one automation system,” Key said. “It automates the filtration of the pool, but also gives you the ability to control other equipment.”

Lighting is the most common example. “Instead of flipping a switch on and off 10 times to find the right color, you just press red, green, blue, or party mode in the app,” he explained. Homeowners can also schedule lights to create nightly ambiance or coordinate them with backyard entertaining. “Most people want their pool to be enjoyed, but also want it to look great,” Key added. “Having your lights set up on a schedule makes it part of the whole backyard experience.”

Salt chlorine generators and heaters can also be tied in. “That salt cell is only operating when there’s water moving through it,” Key explained. “And with heaters, parents have oversight—kids can’t just flip it on and leave it running for hours, which can lead to sky-high gas bills.”

Beyond the Basics

The IntelliFlo3’s control isn’t limited to just those three essentials. “Really, you can control anything that just needs to be turned on or off—booster pumps, ozone systems, UV systems, landscape lights,” Key said. “For simple pools that only have a couple of items to control, this is the perfect solution.”

For more elaborate backyards with multiple features—waterfalls, fire bowls, or extensive lighting setups—Pentair’s IntelliCenter system offers deeper automation. But for the majority of pools, the IntelliFlo3 delivers surprising flexibility without requiring extra hardware.

Benefits for Homeowners and Service Pros

While automation is a big win for homeowners, service professionals may find IntelliFlo3 just as valuable. With remote connectivity built in, technicians can monitor performance, diagnose issues, and even resolve problems without ever rolling a truck.

“Because it’s an internet-connected device, servicers can see pump status, check if it’s running at the right speed, and fix problems on the fly,” Key explained. “You might get a notification that the pump lost prime—often because the water level dropped below the skimmer. Instead of sending someone out, you can call the homeowner and have them top it off. That saves time, fuel, and keeps your customers happier.”

For service companies, that means fewer emergency calls, better efficiency, and the ability to offer premium service packages. “It really is like a white-glove service you can now deliver with just this pump,” Key added.

Pentair’s IntelliFlo3 VSF Pump: Benefits for Homeowners and Service Pros

Tracking Energy and Maintenance

The IntelliFlo line has long displayed instantaneous wattage, but IntelliFlo3 goes further with historical tracking in the Pentair Pool app. “Now you can see daily, weekly, and monthly energy consumption,” Key said.

This data empowers owners to tie maintenance directly to performance. “When energy usage climbs over time, that’s a sign the filter is loading up. Clean it, and you’ll see the usage drop right back down,” he explained. It’s a simple, visual way to keep energy costs down and prolong equipment life.

For eco-conscious homeowners, this visibility is especially appealing. For pros, it provides a teaching tool that reinforces the value of proper maintenance.

Staying Ahead of DOE Regulations

Another reason IntelliFlo3 is timely is the Department of Energy’s upcoming regulation on replacement motors. The DOE already pushed the industry toward variable speed pumps for new installations, but until now, replacement motors were exempt.

“That’s the piece they’re changing,” Key said. “Starting September 25, you can no longer buy or manufacture single-speed motors between 1.15 and 5 horsepower. All those replacement needs will have to go to a variable speed solution.”

For pros, that means educating homeowners on compliance and value. “There’s lots of energy savings, but also automation benefits,” Key emphasized. “It’s an investment that pays off quickly and enhances the pool experience.”

The Future of Smarter Pools

In many ways, the IntelliFlo3 is more than a pump—it’s a control hub, a monitoring system, and a service tool wrapped into one sleek package. “It brings convenience and efficiency for both homeowners and pool professionals,” Key said. “It’s the first of its kind with true Wi-Fi enabled relay control, energy tracking, and remote monitoring—all without additional hardware.”

For pool professionals, that means fewer truck rolls, improved efficiency, and happier clients. For homeowners, it means lower bills, simplified automation, and peace of mind that their pool is being looked after—even when they’re not around.

In an age where smart homes are standard, it only makes sense that pools keep pace. With the IntelliFlo3, Pentair has made that leap, creating a smarter, more efficient, and more enjoyable backyard experience.

The real takeaway? Smarter pools aren’t the future—they’re here now. And with IntelliFlo3, the pump that once only moved water is now moving the entire industry forward.

Natural Gas or Propane Pool Heater: Which is Right for You?

Natural Gas or Propane: Which is Right for You?

One of the key decisions pool owners face when purchasing a gas heater is choosing between natural gas and propane. Both fuels have distinct advantages:

Natural Gas: If your property already has a natural gas line, this is often the most convenient and cost-effective option. Natural gas heaters typically have lower operating costs in regions where utility gas prices are stable.

Propane: For rural or off-grid homeowners without access to natural gas, propane provides flexibility. While propane can be more expensive per BTU, propane heaters deliver the same heating speed and performance as their natural gas counterparts.

Both fuel types are capable of heating water quickly, often raising pool temperatures by several degrees in just hours. For those who want on-demand heating — say, warming the spa before an evening soak — gas heaters remain the fastest solution available.

Pool Heaters vs. Heat Pumps

So, which heating technology is better — gas heaters or heat pumps? The answer depends on your climate, usage habits, and budget.

Pool Heaters vs. Heat Pumps

Gas Heaters (Natural Gas or Propane)

🥇 Best for: Cold climates, large pools, and spa owners who want rapid on-demand heating.
✅ Pros: Heats water quickly, unaffected by outdoor temperature.
❌ Cons: Higher ongoing fuel costs, less energy efficient.

Heat Pumps

🥇 Best for: Warm and mild climates where efficiency matters more than speed.
✅ Pros: Extremely energy efficient, lower operating costs, eco-friendly.
❌ Cons: Slower heat-up times; performance drops in colder air temperatures.

Many homeowners choose gas heaters for spas and heat pumps for pools, or even install both for maximum flexibility.

Choosing the Best Product for Your Pool

When selecting the right pool heating solution, consider:

  1. Pool Size & Volume – Larger pools may require higher BTU gas heaters or large-capacity heat pumps.
  2. Climate & Location – Heat pumps thrive in warmer regions; gas heaters dominate in cooler climates.
  3. Usage Habits – If you want to swim year-round or heat a spa quickly, gas heaters may be worth the fuel cost. For those looking to maintain a comfortable temperature consistently, a heat pump is usually more cost-effective.
  4. Budget – Gas heaters typically cost less upfront but more to operate. Heat pumps cost more initially but offer significant long-term savings.
  5. Automation & Integration – Most leading models are automation-ready, making it easier than ever to manage heating from your smartphone or pool system controller.
Choosing the Best Product for Your Pool

Pricing a Pool Heater or Heat Pump

When it comes to cost, the conversation starts with equipment price. Gas heaters generally enter the market at a lower price point. A compact 175,000–200,000 BTU model often sells for around $1,800 to $2,500. Mid-range heaters in the 250,000–300,000 BTU class usually run between $2,500 and $3,500, while the biggest 350,000–400,000 BTU units for large pools can exceed $5,000. Heat pumps begin higher. Most standard residential models range from $2,800 to $4,000, and larger 120,000–140,000 BTU or inverter-driven units with heat-and-chill features can climb to $6,000 or even $7,500.

The real difference shows up in monthly energy bills. A gas heater running on natural gas typically costs $200 to $400 a month to operate, depending on pool size and how frequently it’s used. Propane can push those costs even higher. Electricity costs for a heat pump are much lower, usually falling between $50 and $150 per month in most regions. That efficiency makes heat pumps especially attractive for homeowners in warmer climates where the units can draw plenty of heat from the surrounding air.

Over the lifetime of the equipment, gas heaters tend to last five to ten years, which means most owners will spend between $12,000 and $18,000 over a decade when fuel and equipment are combined. Heat pumps last longer—typically ten to fifteen years—and although they cost more to install, the lower operating expense brings total ten-year ownership costs closer to $7,000 to $10,000.

Basecrete Technologies has built its reputation on innovation in waterproofing and surface protection for the pool and construction industries. Under the leadership of President Vito Mariano, the company has consistently sought ways to improve longevity, durability, and ease of application for builders and contractors. This year, Basecrete is excited to add three standout products to their lineup—Nano-Set, Suede, and a new fiberglass mesh system within Basecrete Xtreme—each designed to address long-standing challenges in plaster, waterproofing, and bonding.

Basecrete Introduces Three Exciting New Products

Mariano has spent decades refining solutions for plaster and waterproofing. With multiple patents to his name, his focus has always been on developing products that improve performance while simplifying the applicator’s job. “I’ve been working with pool plaster, even with my patents, for many years. I know how the cement aggregate works inside swimming pools,” Mariano explained. His latest releases are a continuation of that philosophy—products that tackle recurring issues like pigment loss, permeability, callbacks, and labor inefficiencies.

Introducing Nano-Set Plaster & Concrete Admixture

Nano Set: Enhancing Pool Plaster from the Inside Out

Solving Plaster Challenges

Nano-Set is an additive formulated to reduce pigment loss, improve workability, and strengthen plaster finishes. “It reduces the pigment loss of the plaster, especially the plaster dust. It allows more cream for workability, which minimizes callbacks from customers,” Mariano said. By reinforcing the plaster matrix, the product aims to eliminate common frustrations contractors and homeowners face after installation.

Feedback from the Field

At Pool Magazine, we often check in with the top applicators and installers in the industry to gauge how new products are performing in real-world conditions. One of those voices is Jason Evans, a respected contractor who was previously featured in Pool Magazine for his work on the iconic Hard Rock Seminole resort pool project. Evans has also been an early adopter of Basecrete’s latest innovations, and he praised Nano Set for solving long-standing issues in plaster performance. “So far, it’s been a great product. It hasn’t affected the workability in any negative way—some additives do cause issues, but this hasn’t at all. It really keeps the color bright and vibrant, and that’s the biggest plus for us,” Evans shared.

Another respected perspective came from Showtime Pools, who ran their own hands-on comparison between Nano and a competing product. Their crews immediately noticed the difference in the field. “I tested Basecrete Nano against a similar product. Plaster crews used both and preferred Nano for troweling and bringing the cream to the surface. Vito, hats off to you and the company all these years. I usually find new products early, and Nano keeps you ahead in the game,” Showtime Pools noted.

Mariano’s Reaction

For Mariano, feedback from respected professionals like Evans and Showtime Pools underscores exactly why Nano Set was developed. “These contractors are out there every day, and they can feel the difference,” Mariano said. “When plaster crews like Showtime say Nano trowels easier, that tells me we’re making their job better. And when guys like Jason talk about color retention and reduced scaling, that confirms we’re protecting the finish the way we designed it. The goal has always been to give applicators a product that’s easier to work with and homeowners a surface that looks beautiful for a long time. Hearing both of those points validated in the field means we hit the mark.”

Mariano explained that Nano Set works by reinforcing the plaster matrix at a microscopic level. “Once you reintegrate the matrix, the amount of dust is eliminated so you don’t have to keep brushing it down after startup. The product encapsulates the pigments and fine particles—whether that’s the Portland cement, silica fume, or other pozzolanic material—while filling in tiny capillaries to make the surface tighter and stronger. That increases PSI, reduces permeability, and protects the plaster from exposure to water, acids, and chemicals,” he said.

Suede Micro Ceramic Waterproofing Membrane With Designer Finish

Suede Micro Ceramic: A Waterproofing Membrane with a Designer Finish

Beyond Traditional Membranes

Suede micro ceramic is being positioned as a versatile cementitious membrane that functions underwater and above water. Unlike plaster, which must remain submerged, Suede can be used across tile lines, on beach entries, and for decorative applications. “It can be exposed in and out of the water, which plaster cannot. Plaster is meant to be submerged. This product is different—we can go up and over and eliminate the tile lines,” Mariano explained.

Applications from Pools to Architecture

The system is gaining traction in applications ranging from water features and koi ponds to architectural finishes. “If you’ve ever been to Europe, especially Italy, they have the old-fashioned Venetian walls that look like suede—that’s why it’s called ‘Suede’. It has a beautiful finish and is very easy to work with,” said Mariano. The material is produced with porcelain-based aggregates, creating a highly durable surface with baked-in color that resists fading.

Compatibility with Basecrete Systems

Suede also works in tandem with Basecrete’s existing waterproofing membranes, offering flexibility for contractors seeking layered protection. “When you have a concrete wall, you want to use the base—say the white Basecrete—and then you apply the Suede. It’s like applying paint over top of drywall or concrete, but it’s troweled on or sprayed and it’s a very workable material,” Mariano said. In some markets, such as Europe, Suede is even being used inside pools as a substitute for plaster where skilled tradespeople are scarce.

Fiberglass Mesh & Basecrete Xtreme: Reinforcing the Future

A Proven Solution for ASR Remediation

Basecrete’s fiberglass mesh system isn’t just a new material—it’s an innovation already making an impact through Basecrete Xtreme, a product unveiled late last year. Integrated directly into the compound, Xtreme has been a boon for alkali–silica reaction (ASR) remediation projects, helping contractors repair compromised concrete structures with efficiency and durability. “There are about a million fibers per square inch, and it adds more flexibility to the application,” Mariano explained.

Basecrete Xtreme ASR Remediation Coming to US Market

Benefits for Plaster Bonding

The fibers also improve adhesion for plaster applications. “When you plaster over top of that, the fibers hook into the plaster, which creates a much better bond to the material,” Mariano said. This mechanical bond reduces the risk of separation between plaster and substrate, a persistent problem when water is introduced.

Growing Role in ICF Pools

The system is particularly well-suited for insulated concrete form (ICF) construction, a growing segment in the pool industry. “The reason why it’s growing so much, especially in the Caribbean, is the lack of tradespeople who know how to do the work. So they’re building them out of ICF, which is insulated concrete foam. I think it’s a perfect system and it’s easy—anybody can build a pool,” Mariano said. By eliminating the need to manually apply mesh, Basecrete’s new product simplifies ICF pool construction and reduces labor demands.

Looking Ahead: A Complete System Provider

With Nano Set, Suede, and their new fiberglass mesh Xtreme product, Basecrete is broadening its role from a single-solution provider to a complete system innovator. “At the end of the day, it’s about giving contractors and homeowners something they can trust. Our job is to make that process easier while protecting the beauty of the finish for years to come. That’s been my focus since the beginning, and it’s what keeps us pushing forward to add more products to our lineup.” — Vito Mariano, Basecrete Technologies.

In an industry where legacy brands dominate, Moov Pool Products is making waves—quite literally—by introducing cutting-edge technology that promises to reshape the future of pool equipment. At the heart of this innovation is the Moov AI Inverter Pump, a self-learning, adaptive, and cloud-connected piece of equipment that’s redefining what pool professionals and homeowners can expect from their pump.

Founded as a joint venture with global manufacturer Fairland, Moov is relatively new to the North American market. But behind its youthful brand is serious firepower. Fairland, best known globally for their heat pump technology, manufactures hundreds of thousands of pumps, salt systems, and cleaners each year. In markets like Europe, Australia, and Latin America, they’ve become leaders. Moov now acts as Fairland’s North American face—delivering next-gen equipment optimized for this market’s unique challenges and preferences.

To learn more about how this revolutionary pump works—and what sets it apart from traditional variable-speed models—we spoke with Fred Lachance, Director of Sales & Marketing at Moov Pool Products. During our conversation, Lachance provided insight into the technology behind the pump, how it integrates with existing systems, and why Moov believes inverter-driven products represent the future of the pool industry.

A Pump That Thinks For Itself

The standout product in Moov’s lineup is the AI Inverter Pump, which Lachance described as “the first pump of its category that is an inverter pump launching in the North American market.” It’s not just variable speed—it’s intelligent.

Built with an algorithm embedded in the drive module, the pump continuously estimates flow rate based on pressure and automatically adjusts its speed to maintain optimal performance. “If the filter gets clogged or anything else on the pad causes restriction, the pump recognizes that and self-adjusts,” explained Lachance.

Rather than relying on costly flow meters to determine output, Moov’s approach uses internal diagnostics: pressure sensors, wattage readings, and multiple baseline calibration tests upon startup. “It runs at three set speeds and captures performance data to create reference points. From there, it constantly adapts to changes,” said Lachance. This means that a clogged filter or stuck valve doesn’t compromise your pool’s performance—it prompts the pump to compensate in real-time.

Smart Enough to Protect Itself

One of the most impressive features of the Moov AI Inverter Pump is its built-in fail-safes. If water pressure becomes dangerously high due to a blockage or restriction, the pump stops automatically. Users are alerted via the cloud-connected Moov Pool app, which notifies either the pool owner or the technician with an error code.

“All of our equipment comes cloud-enabled out of the box,” said Lachance. “There’s no centralized automation panel needed. The brain is in the cloud.” This app-based system allows Moov’s equipment to be monitored, adjusted, and serviced remotely—whether by the pool owner, a professional, or even Moov’s own support team (with permission).

Designed for Integration, Built for the Future

Even though Moov’s pumps feature smart control through their own app, they don’t force customers into an ecosystem. The pumps communicate easily with popular automation systems from the “big three” manufacturers via standard RS-485 connections, and that cable comes included in the box.

Still, Lachance is confident that the future of pool automation won’t involve central panels. “Those were created when individual components weren’t smart. But now, every component can be independently controlled. Why pay thousands extra for a board just to connect to your phone?”

Moov’s approach reflects a broader trend toward decentralized automation—giving pool owners more choice and better control at a lower price point.

So Quiet You Might Think It’s Off

In addition to intelligence, the Moov AI Inverter Pump boasts whisper-quiet operation. “We challenge people at trade shows—this is a live unit. If you find a quieter 1.65 HP pump, I’ll give you this one for free,” said Lachance.

This silence is thanks to its inverter technology, which converts AC power to DC through a modulation system that stabilizes electrical current and minimizes fluctuations. The result is smoother, more efficient performance with less heat, less vibration, and remarkably low noise. “We’re registering 32.6 decibels at one meter,” Lachance said. “Often people don’t realize it’s on.”

The pump’s motor—a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM)—further reduces friction and heat, contributing to a longer lifespan and higher efficiency compared to traditional induction motors.

Simplified User Experience

Moov’s design philosophy centers around user experience. The pump’s large touchscreen interface is a departure from typical button-and-dial controls. “You’ll see a big percentage display showing the speed, wattage usage at the top, and intuitive navigation that makes it easy—even for a homeowner who doesn’t know what a filter is,” said Lachance.

It may seem unorthodox to put a full display on a piece of backyard equipment, but Moov sees it as necessary. As homeowners become less familiar with the technical aspects of pool systems, simplicity becomes critical.

Overcoming the Challenges of Adoption

Despite the technology, quiet performance, and sleek interface, Moov faces challenges. “We’re a new brand. Builders aren’t going to flip overnight,” admitted Lachance. But that’s starting to change.

“Once someone tries one of our products, they usually come back,” he said. “It’s about earning trust through performance and service.” Moov’s young, motivated team—averaging just over 30 years old—is working to build that trust one installer at a time.

Education is another hurdle. “Compared to Europe or Australia, we’re five to ten years behind on technology adoption in this industry,” said Lachance. But with DOE regulations mandating variable speed pumps on most systems, the tide is beginning to turn.

Innovation Beyond the Pump

Moov isn’t just banking on one product. Inverter heat pumps are another major focus for the company, with models boasting a coefficient of performance (COP) up to 18—three times more efficient than standard heat pumps. As Lachance explained, “In Europe, 95% of the market is now inverter heat pumps. In Canada, it’s over 50%. The U.S. is next.”

Moov is also finalizing a new chemical automation product that will monitor and adjust pH and ORP levels in real-time—bringing affordability and ease of use to pool chemistry management. “Water may look clear, but that doesn’t mean it’s balanced. We want to help owners manage their water without needing to be chemists.”

A Specialized Approach

Unlike full-line manufacturers, Moov is focused on what they do best. “We don’t do gas heaters or single-speed pumps. We focus on inverter-based technology, and we aim to be the best at it,” Lachance said.

That focus on specialization—combined with open-platform integration and user-friendly design—positions Moov as a bold disruptor in a space long dominated by a few giants.

Conclusion

The Moov AI Inverter Pump isn’t just another variable-speed pump—it’s a glimpse into the future of pool equipment. With AI-powered adaptability, cloud-based control, whisper-quiet operation, and forward-thinking design, Moov is setting a new standard for what a pump should be. And if the company’s ambitious roadmap is any indication, this is only the beginning.

As the pool industry evolves, companies like Moov are challenging long-held assumptions and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible—not by copying the past, but by inventing the future.

In today’s connected world, consumers expect convenience at their fingertips. For the pool industry, that means automation isn’t just a luxury anymore—it’s a necessity. On a recent episode of the Pool Magazine Podcast, we sat down with Israel Saari, Digital Solutions Category Manager at Pentair Pool, to explore how Pentair automation tools are reshaping the industry for both homeowners and pool professionals.

Meeting the Modern Customer Where They Are

“Homeowners expect a convenient and connected experience, including for their swimming pool,” said Saari. With over 25 years in the technology space, he’s seen firsthand how digital expectations have shifted. From smart fridges to connected doorbells, tech-savvy homeowners want their pools to be just as intelligent—and easy to control from their phones.

“The pool is one of the biggest investments many homeowners make,” he explained. “They want connected experiences that save them money, that create ease of life, so they can focus on other things that are more important to them.”

At Pentair, automation begins with a centralized system that controls the entire pool pad—everything from pumps to lighting—via the Pentair Pool app. This interface makes pool care simpler and less intimidating for homeowners while providing full access and control no matter where they are in the world.

Pentair Automation: Smart Solutions for Every Pool

Saari highlighted several key products in the Pentair automation lineup, starting with the IntelliFlo3 Variable Speed Pump. “It’s a great entry point into automation,” he said. “You’re getting a premium pump, but also the benefit of built-in WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, plus a couple of relays to control other components like a heater, lights, or a booster pump.”

For those managing more complex pool systems—think dual bodies of water, pool/spa combos, and multiple pumps—Pentair’s IntelliCenter is the flagship solution. It offers robust capabilities, including integrated scheduling, user permissions, and control of every feature through the app.

And for homeowners with existing EasyTouch or IntelliTouch systems, Pentair hasn’t left them behind. “We offer an upgrade kit,” Saari said. “You just swap out the panel—it takes an hour or less—and now you’ve got access to the new Pentair Pool app experience.”

For budget-conscious upgrades, there’s also IntelliCenter Lite, ideal for clients with existing breaker panels who want to add intelligent control without fully replacing infrastructure.

The Power of Remote Monitoring

As automation becomes standard, the real value-add is remote monitoring. “When our customers install IntelliCenter, they can walk the homeowner through app setup—but also add themselves as managed users,” explained Saari.

This dual-access setup opens the door to Pentair’s Remote Monitoring Dashboard, a browser-based platform that gives pool professionals a bird’s-eye view of every system they maintain.

Rather than logging into individual apps, techs can monitor hundreds of IntelliCenter systems from a single interface. “It shows connection status, system information, air and water temps, heater performance, chlorinator output, lighting, pump performance, even chemical levels if the pool is equipped with IntelliChem or IntelliChlor,” said Saari.

And it’s not just for viewing—techs can sort systems by alarms and even connect directly to make changes remotely. “It’s extremely valuable both to the homeowner and to our customers,” he emphasized.

Why It Matters for Pool Pros

Whether you’re a builder or a service technician, the benefits of remote automation are substantial.

“For builders, you want that eye in the sky,” said Saari. “Even if you’re not servicing the pool, you can make sure everything is functioning correctly after the build. If the customer is fiddling with settings or something isn’t right, you have instant access.”

For service professionals, the platform offers something even more powerful: proactive maintenance and fewer truck rolls. “They know what the pump should sound like, how it should flow, what kind of power draw is normal,” he explained. “When something’s off, they can see it before the customer even knows there’s a problem.”

This translates to better service, faster diagnosis, and reduced travel. “It could be a simple fix—like adjusting a schedule or pump flow—and you can do that without ever leaving the shop,” he added.

Turning Automation Into Revenue

Beyond operational efficiency, remote monitoring opens the door to new service tiers and revenue streams. “A lot of our customers offer premium white-glove services,” said Saari. “For a fee, they’ll monitor that system daily. It gives homeowners peace of mind knowing someone’s keeping an eye on things even between visits.”

Whether it’s a monthly add-on or part of a seasonal maintenance package, Saari noted that many homeowners are happy to pay extra for the reassurance.

“When you start solving problems proactively and that pool is always humming—clean water, optimized systems—you’re building loyalty,” he said. “You’re differentiating yourself from the competition.”

How to Get Started With Pentair Automation

According to Saari, integrating IntelliCenter and remote monitoring into your operation is easier than you think. The key is to start with a standard operating procedure during installation: “Add your business email as a managed user when setting up the system. Or if the pool is already installed, the homeowner can invite you through the app.”

Once that connection is made, techs can log into the remote dashboard at pro.pentairpool.com using their credentials—no complex setup required. A large TV in the office running the dashboard on a loop is how many top service firms monitor pool fleets in real time.

Pentair also offers hands-on training through Pentair University. “If you’re new to automation, our trainers and field reps won’t let you fail,” Saari said. “They’ll walk you through everything and make sure you’re confident using these tools.”

Standing Apart from the Competition

As automation becomes the norm, Saari sees Pentair’s remote monitoring solution as a powerful differentiator.

“This is the first and only consolidated dashboard in the pool industry with this level of detail,” he said. “It’s a unique selling proposition, whether you’re pitching a new build or promoting your service business.”

Between continuous updates to the Pentair Pool app and a steady stream of enhancements to IntelliCenter, the future looks bright. “We’ve got some exciting things planned for 2025,” Saari hinted. “Stay tuned.”

When it comes to efficient pool maintenance, selecting the right cartridge filter replacement can have a profound impact on service schedules, inventory management, and operational costs. Cartridge filters, like those offered by Pleatco and discussed by Scott Gleason and Kevin Stewart of Pentair Pool on the Pool Magazine podcast, offer pool service professionals a way to streamline their operations.

This article aims to explore the specific time-saving benefits, how standardized cartridges simplify inventory management, the reduction in operational costs, and the advantages of replacing sand filters with cartridge systems. We will also identify the ideal pool types for cartridge filters and how Pleatco’s innovative replacements improve maintenance efficiency.

Time-Saving Benefits for Maintenance Schedules

One of the biggest challenges pool professionals face is balancing busy schedules, especially during peak seasons. Scott Gleason emphasized how the right filter cartridge can extend the time between cleaning cycles. Pleatco’s advanced cartridges feature point bonded filtration fabric and PurePleat technology, which distribute dirt evenly and reduce flow resistance over time. This means fewer service calls to clean clogged filters and quicker service when cleaning is required.

“Less frequent and quicker service events translate into fewer unscheduled visits, making it easier for pool pros to manage their time efficiently,” Gleason explained. This enhanced efficiency allows technicians to serve more clients without compromising quality.

Simplifying Inventory Management with Standardized Cartridges

Kevin Stewart highlighted how Pleatco’s cartridge design supports multiple pool brands, eliminating the need for pool pros to stock various filter types. “By standardizing cartridges, service pros save both time and money. You won’t need to maintain a large inventory of different brands, which makes things much simpler,” Stewart said.

Pleatco’s ultra-line cartridges are particularly noteworthy because they combine multiple filter functions into a single, versatile product, fitting a wide variety of pool systems. This consolidation minimizes inventory while ensuring professionals are prepared for various service scenarios.

Operational Cost Savings with the Right Filter Cartridges

Using high-quality cartridges not only saves time but also reduces operational costs. Gleason explained that opting for cheaper, lower-quality filters often leads to more frequent cleanings and service visits. “While some pool owners may focus on the initial cost, higher-quality cartridges offer long-term savings by extending cleaning intervals and ensuring optimal filtration,” Gleason noted.

Pleatco’s cartridges also help conserve water. Cartridge systems eliminate the need for backwashing, a process required with sand filters that wastes chlorinated water. Stewart pointed out, “Skipping backwashing avoids chemical loss and aligns with water conservation efforts, especially in regions with water restrictions.”

Advantages of Replacing Sand Filters with Cartridge Filtration

Cartridge filters offer several advantages over traditional sand filters. Stewart noted that “cartridge filtration delivers better water clarity by capturing particles nearly twice as small as sand filters.” Additionally, cartridge systems provide greater square footage for water filtration, reducing the frequency of cleanings.

Sand filters require frequent backwashing, which can occur weekly, while cartridge filters may only need cleaning every few months. The absence of backwashing in cartridge systems not only saves water but also simplifies maintenance, reducing downtime for pool owners.

Cartridge filters may only need cleaning every few months

Best Pool Types for Cartridge Filters

According to Gleason, cartridge filters are ideal for several specific pool settings:

  • Residential pools with space constraints where large sand filters would be impractical.
  • Saltwater pools that benefit from the fine filtration capabilities of cartridges.
  • Pools in areas with water restrictions, where conserving water is critical.
  • Low-usage pools that don’t require constant backwashing, making them ideal for cartridge filtration.

These filters are particularly well-suited for pools where water clarity is paramount, and maintenance needs to be minimal.

H2Flow Controls, a leader in water management technology, has launched an exciting new product, LevelSmart, promising to revolutionize pool maintenance with its innovative wireless autofill system. During a recent interview on the Pool Magazine podcast, Sean McDermott, VP of Sales, and Gavin Hackett, President of H2Flow Controls, shared their insights on the new technology, the company’s journey, and their plans to grow their presence in the aquatics industry.

H2Flow Controls: A Legacy of Innovation in Water Management

H2Flow’s story begins in 1999, when the company was founded by Paul Hackett as a master distributor for Emotron, a Swedish manufacturer of variable frequency drives (VFDs) and power monitoring systems. With a solid background in industrial products, H2Flow pivoted towards the pool and spa market in 2008 when the Virginia Graeme Baker (VGB) Act created new safety regulations.

“We saw an opportunity with the VGB Act and launched the PSP 20, a secondary shutoff device to prevent drain entrapment,” explained Gavin Hackett. “It gave us a springboard and built a solid reputation for us in the industry.”

From there, the company introduced FlowVis, an award-winning flow meter that Sean McDermott describes as “one of those products where you wonder why you didn’t invent it yourself.” FlowVis combines the functions of a check valve and a flow meter, offering a unique solution that is durable, accurate, and easy to install, even on existing residential pool systems.

LevelSmart Wireless Autofill

The Launch of the LevelSmart Wireless Autofill

Building on their success with FlowVis, H2Flow’s latest innovation is the LevelSmart wireless autofill system. Traditional autofill systems require installation during pool construction or costly retrofits that involve cutting into the pool deck. Sean McDermott highlighted the limitations of those systems, explaining:

“Installing a wired autofill system after a pool is built often requires destroying the pool deck, making it both time-consuming and expensive. That’s where LevelSmart comes in. We’ve eliminated the need for wired sensors by creating a wireless sensor that mounts easily inside the pool or skimmer.”

The beauty of LevelSmart lies in its simplicity. The wireless sensor, powered by an internal battery, measures the water level and communicates with a valve controller via radio frequency to manage water levels. “It maintains the water level with incredible precision—within one-eighth to one-tenth of an inch,” McDermott added.

Solving Water Turbulence with Smart Algorithms

Unlike traditional systems that struggle with fluctuating water levels caused by swimmers or pool pumps, LevelSmart overcomes these challenges with advanced algorithms. “Our system accounts for water turbulence and calculates an average water level to ensure accurate autofill, regardless of waves or splashes,” said McDermott.

The smart autofill system eliminates one of the most common frustrations for pool owners: refilling the pool manually or installing cumbersome aftermarket systems. This ease of use and precision control earned LevelSmart recognition as one of the “Top 50 Hot New Products” by Pool & Spa News.

Expanding Market Presence and Trade Show Engagement

H2Flow has ambitious plans to showcase LevelSmart at several major trade shows across the U.S., including the Northeast Pool & Spa Show, the Western Show in Long Beach, and the Orlando show. “Trade shows have been a huge part of how we’ve grown our brand over the years,” said Hackett. “We’ll be at several shows this season, continuing to tell our story to pool professionals.”

Serving Both Commercial and Residential Markets

H2Flow has long been known for its innovative solutions for commercial pools, including variable frequency drives, automated fill systems, and safety products. But in recent years, the company has seen significant growth on the residential side as well, driven by its FlowVis and now LevelSmart products.

“Variable speed pumps are now required for residential pools, but most homeowners don’t know the optimal speed to run them,” McDermott explained. “That’s where FlowVis comes in. It’s not just a check valve but a flow meter that helps optimize filtration and energy use. At under $200, it’s an easy choice for pool owners looking to upgrade.”

With LevelSmart, H2Flow aims to achieve similar success in the residential market. “Many pool owners who didn’t install an autofill system initially will never go back and retrofit one because of the cost and effort. A chemical fire at Texas Pool Supply prompted an emergency response and a shelter-in-place order for part of Frisco, Texas, on Wednesday morning. The 3-alarm fire broke out at the pool chemical supply warehouse located on John W. Elliott Drive, near All Stars Avenue, around 8 a.m. The Little Elm Fire Department was first on the scene, with additional mutual aid provided by fire departments from The Colony, Plano, Prosper, and McKinney.

Hazmat units were called in due to the hazardous nature of the chemicals involved in the fire. Three chemicals—pool salt, chlorine, and pool shock—were involved in the fire. Fire Marshal and Public Information Officer Kelly Kistner confirmed that two of these chemicals are classified as hazardous during a press conference. Fortunately, all employees inside the warehouse at the time managed to evacuate safely. However, two Frisco firefighters were hospitalized for smoke inhalation but are expected to recover.

The city issued a shelter-in-place notice for nearby buildings, including Medical City Frisco, Toyota Stadium, and several apartment complexes. The notice was lifted at 9:18 a.m. after the fire was contained and air quality monitoring showed no harmful levels of contamination. Crews from the public works department worked to manage water runoff, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is expected to investigate further. Some roads in the area remain closed as the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Although now contained, this morning’s fire is potentially a devastating setback for Heritage Pool Supply Group, which had recently launched the Texas Pool Supply brand back in June of 2022. The 50,000 sq. ft. Frisco facility is the flagship location for the brand, containing a warehouse, showroom, and training space.
