When it comes to pool equipment, few innovations have reshaped the industry as much as variable speed pumps. They’ve cut energy costs, reduced strain on equipment, and helped pool owners embrace greener backyard living. Now, Pentair has taken things to the next level with the IntelliFlo3 VSF pump—a solution designed not only to move water efficiently but also to bring powerful automation and remote connectivity directly into the heart of the backyard.

To better understand what makes the IntelliFlo3 such a game-changer for both pool owners and service professionals, Pool Magazine sat down with Adam Key, Senior Product Manager for Pentair Pool Pumps. With more than 15 years at Pentair, much of it spent in new product development, Key has seen firsthand how pool technology has evolved—and why this latest generation pump is such a leap forward.

How IntelliFlo3 is Redefining Pool Automation

For decades, single-speed pumps controlled by mechanical time clocks were the industry standard. They kept water moving, but at a steep cost. “Those time clocks were the first and most primitive form of automation for pools,” Key explained. “Whenever that pump was on, it was running full blast, consuming a lot of electricity. That’s why we wanted time clocks—to cut costs and energy waste.”

Variable speed pumps introduced scheduling and energy savings, but they had one big flaw: the user interfaces were often clunky. “Usually that schedule’s not changed,” Key noted. “It’s really not much of an automation tool if you’re never updating it based on seasonal needs or bather load.”

That’s where IntelliFlo3 changes everything. By adding Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, Pentair gave users an intuitive mobile app to set, adjust, and monitor pump schedules anytime, anywhere. “You could be on vacation, see a storm coming at home, and increase the filtration cycle to keep your pool clear—all from your phone,” Key said. The result: a pump that adapts to real-life conditions instead of being locked into a static program.

Built-In Relays for Smarter Control

One of the IntelliFlo3’s biggest innovations is its built-in relays, allowing homeowners to control more than just water circulation. “It’s a two-in-one automation system,” Key said. “It automates the filtration of the pool, but also gives you the ability to control other equipment.”

Lighting is the most common example. “Instead of flipping a switch on and off 10 times to find the right color, you just press red, green, blue, or party mode in the app,” he explained. Homeowners can also schedule lights to create nightly ambiance or coordinate them with backyard entertaining. “Most people want their pool to be enjoyed, but also want it to look great,” Key added. “Having your lights set up on a schedule makes it part of the whole backyard experience.”

Salt chlorine generators and heaters can also be tied in. “That salt cell is only operating when there’s water moving through it,” Key explained. “And with heaters, parents have oversight—kids can’t just flip it on and leave it running for hours, which can lead to sky-high gas bills.”

Beyond the Basics

The IntelliFlo3’s control isn’t limited to just those three essentials. “Really, you can control anything that just needs to be turned on or off—booster pumps, ozone systems, UV systems, landscape lights,” Key said. “For simple pools that only have a couple of items to control, this is the perfect solution.”

For more elaborate backyards with multiple features—waterfalls, fire bowls, or extensive lighting setups—Pentair’s IntelliCenter system offers deeper automation. But for the majority of pools, the IntelliFlo3 delivers surprising flexibility without requiring extra hardware.

Benefits for Homeowners and Service Pros

While automation is a big win for homeowners, service professionals may find IntelliFlo3 just as valuable. With remote connectivity built in, technicians can monitor performance, diagnose issues, and even resolve problems without ever rolling a truck.

“Because it’s an internet-connected device, servicers can see pump status, check if it’s running at the right speed, and fix problems on the fly,” Key explained. “You might get a notification that the pump lost prime—often because the water level dropped below the skimmer. Instead of sending someone out, you can call the homeowner and have them top it off. That saves time, fuel, and keeps your customers happier.”

For service companies, that means fewer emergency calls, better efficiency, and the ability to offer premium service packages. “It really is like a white-glove service you can now deliver with just this pump,” Key added.

Pentair’s IntelliFlo3 VSF Pump: Benefits for Homeowners and Service Pros

Tracking Energy and Maintenance

The IntelliFlo line has long displayed instantaneous wattage, but IntelliFlo3 goes further with historical tracking in the Pentair Pool app. “Now you can see daily, weekly, and monthly energy consumption,” Key said.

This data empowers owners to tie maintenance directly to performance. “When energy usage climbs over time, that’s a sign the filter is loading up. Clean it, and you’ll see the usage drop right back down,” he explained. It’s a simple, visual way to keep energy costs down and prolong equipment life.

For eco-conscious homeowners, this visibility is especially appealing. For pros, it provides a teaching tool that reinforces the value of proper maintenance.

Staying Ahead of DOE Regulations

Another reason IntelliFlo3 is timely is the Department of Energy’s upcoming regulation on replacement motors. The DOE already pushed the industry toward variable speed pumps for new installations, but until now, replacement motors were exempt.

“That’s the piece they’re changing,” Key said. “Starting September 25, you can no longer buy or manufacture single-speed motors between 1.15 and 5 horsepower. All those replacement needs will have to go to a variable speed solution.”

For pros, that means educating homeowners on compliance and value. “There’s lots of energy savings, but also automation benefits,” Key emphasized. “It’s an investment that pays off quickly and enhances the pool experience.”

The Future of Smarter Pools

In many ways, the IntelliFlo3 is more than a pump—it’s a control hub, a monitoring system, and a service tool wrapped into one sleek package. “It brings convenience and efficiency for both homeowners and pool professionals,” Key said. “It’s the first of its kind with true Wi-Fi enabled relay control, energy tracking, and remote monitoring—all without additional hardware.”

For pool professionals, that means fewer truck rolls, improved efficiency, and happier clients. For homeowners, it means lower bills, simplified automation, and peace of mind that their pool is being looked after—even when they’re not around.

In an age where smart homes are standard, it only makes sense that pools keep pace. With the IntelliFlo3, Pentair has made that leap, creating a smarter, more efficient, and more enjoyable backyard experience.

The real takeaway? Smarter pools aren’t the future—they’re here now. And with IntelliFlo3, the pump that once only moved water is now moving the entire industry forward.

When it comes to efficient pool maintenance, selecting the right cartridge filter replacement can have a profound impact on service schedules, inventory management, and operational costs. Cartridge filters, like those offered by Pleatco and discussed by Scott Gleason and Kevin Stewart of Pentair Pool on the Pool Magazine podcast, offer pool service professionals a way to streamline their operations.

This article aims to explore the specific time-saving benefits, how standardized cartridges simplify inventory management, the reduction in operational costs, and the advantages of replacing sand filters with cartridge systems. We will also identify the ideal pool types for cartridge filters and how Pleatco’s innovative replacements improve maintenance efficiency.

Time-Saving Benefits for Maintenance Schedules

One of the biggest challenges pool professionals face is balancing busy schedules, especially during peak seasons. Scott Gleason emphasized how the right filter cartridge can extend the time between cleaning cycles. Pleatco’s advanced cartridges feature point bonded filtration fabric and PurePleat technology, which distribute dirt evenly and reduce flow resistance over time. This means fewer service calls to clean clogged filters and quicker service when cleaning is required.

“Less frequent and quicker service events translate into fewer unscheduled visits, making it easier for pool pros to manage their time efficiently,” Gleason explained. This enhanced efficiency allows technicians to serve more clients without compromising quality.

Simplifying Inventory Management with Standardized Cartridges

Kevin Stewart highlighted how Pleatco’s cartridge design supports multiple pool brands, eliminating the need for pool pros to stock various filter types. “By standardizing cartridges, service pros save both time and money. You won’t need to maintain a large inventory of different brands, which makes things much simpler,” Stewart said.

Pleatco’s ultra-line cartridges are particularly noteworthy because they combine multiple filter functions into a single, versatile product, fitting a wide variety of pool systems. This consolidation minimizes inventory while ensuring professionals are prepared for various service scenarios.

Operational Cost Savings with the Right Filter Cartridges

Using high-quality cartridges not only saves time but also reduces operational costs. Gleason explained that opting for cheaper, lower-quality filters often leads to more frequent cleanings and service visits. “While some pool owners may focus on the initial cost, higher-quality cartridges offer long-term savings by extending cleaning intervals and ensuring optimal filtration,” Gleason noted.

Pleatco’s cartridges also help conserve water. Cartridge systems eliminate the need for backwashing, a process required with sand filters that wastes chlorinated water. Stewart pointed out, “Skipping backwashing avoids chemical loss and aligns with water conservation efforts, especially in regions with water restrictions.”

Advantages of Replacing Sand Filters with Cartridge Filtration

Cartridge filters offer several advantages over traditional sand filters. Stewart noted that “cartridge filtration delivers better water clarity by capturing particles nearly twice as small as sand filters.” Additionally, cartridge systems provide greater square footage for water filtration, reducing the frequency of cleanings.

Sand filters require frequent backwashing, which can occur weekly, while cartridge filters may only need cleaning every few months. The absence of backwashing in cartridge systems not only saves water but also simplifies maintenance, reducing downtime for pool owners.

Cartridge filters may only need cleaning every few months

Best Pool Types for Cartridge Filters

According to Gleason, cartridge filters are ideal for several specific pool settings:

  • Residential pools with space constraints where large sand filters would be impractical.
  • Saltwater pools that benefit from the fine filtration capabilities of cartridges.
  • Pools in areas with water restrictions, where conserving water is critical.
  • Low-usage pools that don’t require constant backwashing, making them ideal for cartridge filtration.

These filters are particularly well-suited for pools where water clarity is paramount, and maintenance needs to be minimal.

How Pleatco Cartridges Help Pool Professionals Accommodate a Busy Maintenance Schedule

With maintenance schedules becoming more demanding, especially during peak pool season, using Pleatco filters ensures service professionals can meet tight timelines. “Making an extra trip to a pool for filter cleaning can feel tedious, especially during busy times,” Gleason noted. “Pleatco’s ultra-line cartridges allow for fast and easy cleaning, which means less time spent on each service call.”

This is achieved by the combination of Pleatco’s key features—point bonded fabric, open flow core, and PurePleat technology. Together, these innovations reduce the frequency of filter cleanings and make rinsing faster when needed.

“Service techs can expect cartridge cleaning to be as simple as removing, rinsing, and replacing,” Gleason added. This streamlined process helps professionals move through their service routes more efficiently, accommodating a larger number of clients.

As chlorine prices continue to soar, pool owners and professionals are increasingly seeking alternatives that maintain water quality without breaking the bank. The rising costs have led to a surge in demand for algaecide treatments, with Eeziblue standing out as a game-changer in the market. This innovative, mineral-based solution offers an efficient, cost-effective way to prevent and eliminate algae, all while significantly reducing chlorine usage.

Pool Magazine had the opportunity to discuss the product in detail with Samantha and Connor Tiegs of Eeziblue. Their insights into the product’s development, effectiveness, and unique benefits highlight why it has become a go-to option for those looking to simplify pool care while cutting down on chemical expenses.

A Product Born from Necessity: The Origins of Eeziblue

Eeziblue’s story begins in 2003 in Zimbabwe, a country where frequent power outages made traditional pool maintenance challenging. Samantha explained, “Dave, the original inventor, developed Eeziblue to address the difficulties of managing pools during outages. His goal was to create a product that could keep pools algae-free even if pumps and filtration systems weren’t running.” The product quickly gained popularity in Africa, later expanding under the Blue 52 brand in South Africa and Australia.

Today, Eeziblue has made its way to the U.S., where its affordability and effectiveness have been welcomed by pool owners and professionals. “It’s been amazing to see how well it’s taken off here,” Samantha shared. “The feedback we get from customers—both professionals and homeowners—has been incredible. They love how simple it is to use and how much they save by using less chlorine.”

How Eeziblue Works: Mineral Synergy for Cleaner Pools

At its core, Eeziblue is a “monthly pool care solution” designed to eliminate and prevent algae, while significantly reducing chlorine consumption. “Our formula uses minerals that work together with chlorine to maintain a crystal-clear swimming environment,” Connor explained. “By using Eeziblue, pool owners can cut chlorine usage by up to 75%. Instead of maintaining levels at 2 to 4 parts per million, they can drop it to just 0.5 to 1 ppm.”

This reduction not only saves money but also makes swimming more enjoyable. “It creates a softer, gentler swimming environment,” Connor added. “That’s a huge win for families who want their pool water to be easy on the skin and eyes.”

Samantha emphasized the convenience for professionals: “Eeziblue works like a multi-tool for pool maintenance. There’s no need for separate phosphate removers, clarifiers, or algaecides. Everything is handled with one product—and that simplicity makes it popular among both professionals and homeowners.”

The Science of Copper-Zinc Synergy

A key feature of Eeziblue’s effectiveness lies in what Samantha and Connor call copper-zinc synergy. “Copper is a well-known algaecide,” Connor explained, “but it has its challenges—namely the risk of staining when used at high concentrations. Zinc enhances the effectiveness of copper while also preventing it from precipitating out and staining surfaces.”

The combination allows Eeziblue to work effectively at lower concentrations. “Zinc weakens the cell wall of algae, making it easier for copper ions to penetrate,” Connor elaborated. “This means less copper is needed to get the job done. Plus, the zinc keeps the copper in solution, so it’s effective throughout the entire month.”

Maintaining the correct pH is crucial to preventing staining. “We recommend keeping the pH between 6.8 and 7.4,” Samantha said. “This ensures that the copper stays in solution and works efficiently to keep algae at bay.”

How Eeziblue Stands Out in a Crowded Market

Unlike many other algaecides that depend on constant filtration or involve expensive startup costs, Eeziblue was designed to work even in unpredictable conditions. “Because Eeziblue was originally developed in Africa, it doesn’t rely on continuous pump operation to be effective,” Samantha pointed out. “That makes it perfect for pools in areas with power outages or those looking to reduce pump run times.”

Additionally, Eeziblue’s monthly dosage system provides greater flexibility than other mineral ionizers, which often require high initial investments. “Weather is unpredictable—especially here in Houston,” Samantha explained. “A heavy storm can wash away expensive chemical treatments. With Eeziblue, you dose every month, so you’re always covered, even in unpredictable conditions.”

Subscription-Based Maintenance: Proactive Pool Care Made Easy

Eeziblue’s subscription model offers a straightforward way for homeowners to maintain their pools without hassle. “Preventing algae is much cheaper than treating it,” Connor explained. “With our subscription, homeowners receive a pre-measured dose tailored to their pool size every month. It’s a convenient reminder to apply the product and handle any routine maintenance.”

This proactive approach prevents algae from ever taking hold, saving pool owners both time and money. “Dealing with algae after the fact is time-consuming and expensive,” Samantha said. “It can take multiple trips to the pool store, and you’ll end up buying several different products. Eeziblue helps you avoid all that.”

New subscribers can try Eeziblue risk-free, thanks to a promotion that offers the first month free with no commitment. “It’s a great way to experience the benefits firsthand,” Connor added.

Green to Clean: Transforming Pools with Eeziblue

Eeziblue also excels at tackling green pools, making it a versatile tool for emergencies. “We love it when customers send us before-and-after photos of their green-to-clean transformations,” Samantha said. “The process is simple: Adjust the pH to 6.8-7.4, add Eeziblue to the skimmer basket, and follow up with a chlorine shock. In 24 hours, the algae settles at the bottom, ready to be vacuumed away.”

This fast-acting solution gives pool owners peace of mind, knowing they can quickly restore their pool’s clarity after unexpected algae blooms.

Why Eeziblue Is the Smart Choice for Pool Owners

In a market filled with algaecide products, Eeziblue stands out by offering an affordable, flexible, and easy-to-use solution. “Our product is designed to make pool care simple,” Samantha emphasized. “With Eeziblue, you don’t need to juggle multiple chemicals or worry about expensive equipment. It’s one product that covers all your needs.”

Connor reiterated the importance of proactive care: “Our goal is to help pool owners avoid costly algae problems before they even start. With Eeziblue, you only need to think about your pool once a month—and that’s all it takes to keep it crystal-clear.”

By reducing chlorine use, simplifying maintenance, and offering consistent results, Eeziblue provides a reliable solution for pool owners looking to cut costs and enjoy their pools without stress. Whether for regular upkeep or a quick fix for green water, Eeziblue makes pool care easy, effective, and economical—just what consumers need in today’s climate of rising chemical costs.

Why Pool Professionals are Turning to Eeziblue

For pool service professionals, Eeziblue offers a game-changing solution that simplifies maintenance, reduces costs, and enhances customer satisfaction. As chlorine prices remain high, many professionals are looking for innovative ways to optimize their chemical usage—and Eeziblue fits perfectly into that strategy.

“Eeziblue is the ultimate multi-tool for the back of your truck,” said Samantha Tiegs. “With just one product, pool professionals can eliminate the need for phosphate removers, clarifiers, and other specialized chemicals. It allows them to carry fewer items on their routes, which saves time and effort.”

The convenience doesn’t stop there. Eeziblue comes in bulk 40-pound buckets, making it easy for professionals to manage inventory. “Rather than lugging around multiple chemicals, one bucket of Eeziblue can treat pools efficiently all month long,” Samantha explained. Its ability to reduce chlorine usage by up to 75% also means fewer trips to replenish chlorine stock, further cutting costs.

For pool professionals interested in learning more or trying Eeziblue for themselves, the company offers bulk purchasing options and special promotions through their website. “We invite service professionals to give it a try,” Samantha said. “We’re confident that Eeziblue will become a trusted tool in their maintenance routine.”

In the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain disruptions and plant closures created a surge in chlorine prices that pool owners and service providers are still grappling with today. Many hoped that the reopening of BioLab’s plant in November 2022—a critical producer of chlorine products—would ease the strain on the market. However, almost two years later, chlorine prices remain high.

Seeking to provide clarity, this article delves into the underlying reasons why chlorine prices have not returned to pre-pandemic levels, despite expectations of relief. A combination of market dynamics, increased demand, limited supply, rising production and transportation costs, and inflation continues to exert upward pressure on chlorine prices.

What Caused Chlorine Prices to Spike?

To understand why chlorine prices remain elevated, it’s essential to look back at the events that triggered the initial spike.

The initial spike in chlorine prices can be traced back to a combination of several key factors:

1. The BioLab Plant Fire in 2020

The most significant event contributing to the chlorine shortage was a devastating fire at BioLab’s production plant in Westlake, Louisiana. The fire occurred in August 2020, shortly after Hurricane Laura swept through the area, damaging the plant. BioLab was a leading producer of chlorine tablets, and the destruction of this facility removed a major supplier from the market. With fewer producers able to meet demand, prices began to rise sharply.

2. Surge in Pool Construction During the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic led to a boom in backyard pool construction, as more people sought ways to stay entertained at home. As a result, demand for chlorine soared. With more pools being built than ever before, both new and existing pool owners stocked up on chlorine to maintain their water, further exacerbating the supply crunch.

3. Panic Buying and Stockpiling

Similar to the panic buying seen with other goods during the pandemic, many pool owners and professionals began stockpiling chlorine. Uncertain of when the supply chain would normalize, consumers bought large quantities of chlorine tablets, adding more pressure to the already limited supply.

4. Supply Chain Disruptions

Global supply chain issues affected the delivery of raw materials and chemical components needed for chlorine production. Pandemic-related labor shortages, transportation delays, and increased shipping costs made it more difficult for manufacturers to keep up with demand, which in turn drove prices higher.

5. Limited Number of Chlorine Producers

Even before the fire, the pool chlorine industry was already reliant on a small number of manufacturers, with limited capacity to absorb sudden demand increases or production disruptions. With BioLab out of commission, the remaining producers struggled to fill the gap, leading to further price increases.

These factors combined to create a perfect storm, resulting in skyrocketing chlorine prices that have yet to return to pre-pandemic levels, even with BioLab back online.

Understanding Market Dynamics: A Slow Road to Stability

Although chlorine prices have eased slightly from their peak in 2022, they remain stubbornly high compared to pre-pandemic levels. Market reports indicate that prices have decreased from their all-time high, offering some relief to pool owners and service professionals. However, chlorine still costs approximately 20% more than it did before the pandemic began.

2024 Chlorine Price Index – Business Analytiq

This modest dip in prices reflects a gradual recovery, yet, the market has not returned to normal. Persistent inflation, rising production and transportation costs, and increased demand for chlorine are keeping prices elevated.

While these conditions suggest that further price stabilization may be on the horizon, the 20% gap highlights the lasting impact of the pandemic-era disruptions. Many pool owners have had to adjust their budgets and explore alternatives, such as mineral-based algaecides or UV systems, to manage costs as they continue navigating higher chlorine prices.

Supply and Demand: A Pandemic-Driven Boom in Pool Construction

The pandemic triggered a surge in pool construction as people sought ways to enhance their outdoor living spaces. This increase in residential pools has led to a rise in demand for pool chemicals, including chlorine. According to industry reports, the demand for chlorine has grown steadily since 2020, putting additional pressure on manufacturers to meet consumer needs.

However, the number of companies that manufacture pool chlorine tablets is limited, leaving little room to absorb the sudden uptick in demand. Even with BioLab back in operation, the supply side of the equation is still catching up. Ongoing supply chain disruptions—ranging from shortages in raw materials to bottlenecks in logistics—have further complicated efforts to streamline production.

Additionally, chlorine producers are facing a labor crunch, with many manufacturers struggling to fill skilled positions needed to keep production lines running efficiently. As a result, it has been challenging to meet the higher demand without delays or increased costs, perpetuating high prices.

Rising Production and Transportation Cost

The cost of producing and transporting chlorine has also increased significantly, contributing to the persistent price hikes. Chlorine production is energy-intensive, and rising energy prices have driven up operational costs. Additionally, chlorine tablets require specific packaging to ensure safe handling and storage, and the cost of packaging materials has gone up as well with inflation.

Transportation costs have also increased, further impacting chlorine prices. The chemical industry relies heavily on specialized transportation to move hazardous materials like chlorine safely. Fuel costs have fluctuated over the past few years, and freight companies have raised rates due to driver shortages and higher operational expenses.

“The logistics involved in transporting chlorine are complicated and expensive,” one industry insider explained. “These costs inevitably get passed down to the consumer.”

Inflation’s Impact on Chlorine Prices

Inflation has played a major role in keeping chlorine prices elevated. In recent years, inflationary pressures have increased across nearly all sectors of the economy, from raw materials to labor and transportation. The pool industry has not been immune to these effects.

Even as some supply chain issues have been resolved, the cost of doing business has remained high. Labor costs have increased as employers offer higher wages to attract workers, and the cost of raw materials used in chlorine production has risen as well. These inflationary pressures have forced manufacturers to maintain higher prices to cover their increased expenses.

Outlook: When Will Prices Stabilize?

The chlorine market is likely to remain volatile in the near term, with no immediate relief in sight for consumers. While BioLab’s reopening was a big step in the right direction toward restoring balance in the market, the industry is still grappling with the long-term effects of the pandemic. Market stabilization will depend on several factors, including improvements in supply chain efficiency, labor availability, and energy prices.

In the meantime, pool owners and service providers will need to find ways to manage costs. Many professionals are turning to alternatives, such as mineral-based algaecides and UV sanitation systems, to reduce chlorine consumption. Others are stocking up on chlorine during off-peak seasons, when prices are slightly lower, to mitigate the impact of ongoing price fluctuations.

Industry experts predict that chlorine prices may begin to stabilize by late 2024 or 2025 as supply chains improve and inflationary pressures ease. However, with demand for pools and outdoor living continuing to grow, it is unlikely that chlorine prices will return to pre-pandemic levels anytime soon.

Main Take Aways

Despite hopes that chlorine would drop substantially in 2024, a combination of factors has kept them stubbornly high. Market dynamics, ongoing supply and demand imbalances, rising production and transportation costs, and inflation have all contributed to the persistence of elevated prices.

While there may be some long-term stabilization in the future, pool owners and service professionals will need to remain adaptable in managing their chlorine needs. Exploring alternative sanitation methods, optimizing chemical usage, and planning ahead for seasonal fluctuations can help mitigate the impact of high chlorine prices.

As the pool industry continues to evolve, the lessons learned from this period of price instability will likely shape future strategies for managing supply, demand, and production costs more effectively. Until then, consumers will need to navigate the realities of a complex and evolving market.

The swimming pool is a universal symbol of fun. But behind all the fun of a summer swim should be an efficient pool pump that you can rely on, no matter what.

“When you look at the pool industry post-COVID, we have more swimming pools in the U.S. than we have ever had before,” said Rob Gaither, Sales Manager for Pentair Pool. “This means there is also an influx of new pool owners, which can impose safety risks if they are not properly educated on their pool’s capabilities, functions, and maintenance needs.”

Education is critical, especially with an increased focus on innovative and connected technologies following new regulations by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

According to the DOE, pool pumps can be a home’s second-largest energy consumer. And as a result, new rules require pool pumps to meet minimum efficiency standards in the U.S. Unlike single speed pumps, which run at a single full-capacity speed, only variable speed pumps can adjust speed to keep flow constant. By raising and lowering the speed as needed, instead of keeping the same speed all day, a variable speed pool pump uses less energy. This can result in cost savings for pool owners, improved water flow, and less wear and tear on equipment.

“From a safety standpoint,” said Gaither, “The variable speed pump allows the pool servicer some control to educate and help customers create a safe swimming environment.”

Become the Expert

It’s essential to help customers understand their pool equipment pad and how everything works together.

“Over the past two years, I have trained over 10,000 pool professionals,” said Gaither. “We are counting on them to trickle down that knowledge to pool owners and build trust as industry experts. They value our advice.”

Staying current on the latest technology ensures that pool professionals can provide the highest quality service, support safe pools, and leverage new technologies to benefit their customers. It’s also essential to understand how regulations impact technologies. In November 2023, the DOE enacted an updated rule that includes a series of changes over the next several years, with the first going into effect in September 2025. This first update will require that all dedicated-purpose pool pump motors between 1.15 THP and 5 THP (manufactured on and after September 29, 2025) be variable speed.1

The benefits of variable speed pumps extend beyond meeting upcoming energy requirements, however.

“Moving water is very important for water filtration and quality,” said Adam Key, Product Manager at Pentair Pool. “With variable speed pumps, you can have constant moving water at a slower flow rate. This allows for better water clarity and quality and, thus, fewer issues for pool servicers. All while reducing energy costs for homeowners.”

Variable speed pumps can offer better control over water flow and pressure, leading to improved filtration and cleaner pools. When selecting the right variable speed and flow pump, be sure to look for features that make setting the ideal flow rate easy. For example, the Pentair IntelliFlo3® Variable Speed and Flow Pump includes built-in technology and automation for optimal flow and performance. It automatically adjusts its speed to compensate for filter loading, heating, cleaning, and more. With these innovative technologies, pool professionals can spend less time servicing the pool equipment pad, and pool owners have more time to enjoy their pool while saving energy and money.  And the best part? It comes with quieter operation for a more enjoyable poolside experience.

Operate Efficiently with Automation

As the industry continues to evolve and products become more connected, pool professionals are working hard to provide their customers with the tools they need to more easily enjoy their backyard pool. Apps often put control in the palm of pool owners’ hands, and that’s just one way pool ownership is becoming more effortless.

By using an automated pump like the award-winning IntelliFlo3® Variable Speed and Flow Pump, pool owners will enjoy entry-level automation that connects up to two devices, enabling them to control their pool lights and more. As the pumps are easy to install and deliver top-notch performance, pool professionals will also enjoy a natural business growth opportunity with the remote monitoring possibilities these pumps provide.

“Automated variable speed pool pumps can conveniently connect to the homeowner’s Wi-Fi to gain access to applications that benefit both the pool professional and the pool owner,” said Key. “This allows pool servicers to monitor the pump remotely, saving time and fuel by eliminating service trips and addressing common challenges before they arise.”

By offering connected variable speed pool pumps to their customers and setting up remote monitoring in the Pentair Pro app, pool professionals can receive alerts in real-time, a service that can be added to your list of business offerings.

What makes variable speed and flow so notable is its incredible energy efficiency. In fact, with a third-generation IntelliFlo3® Variable Speed and Flow Pump, pool owners can save up to 90%* on energy consumption compared to a single speed pump.

“These pumps allow for easy installation and sync with existing pool automation systems,” said Gaither. “If you have a customer who likes the idea of being able to do more with their pool, whether safe powering of a salt flow generator or changing the pool color lights for their kid’s birthday party, automation is a solution that offers simpler operations more affordably. And it creates more upsell opportunities for pool servicers.”

A Pump for any Pool

A pool pump is the heart of the pool’s filtration system, playing an important role in keeping the water cleaner and clearer.

Pentair Pool offers a variety of pool pumps for pool owners to choose from, including variable speed pool pumps that offer a more effortless pool experience. Designed to take the pool industry to the next level, the IntelliFlo3® Variable Speed and Flow Pump allows pool servicers to conquer their install like a champ. With flexibility to suit any pool size and options for both 1.5 HP and 3.0 HP, these pumps offer entry-level automation and optional touchscreens.

And with new variable speed pumps, pool professionals can feel confident that pools follow the latest DOE regulations, significantly improve their bottom line, grow their business offerings, and strengthen customer loyalty – all while offering pool owners lower electrical bills, cleaner water, and a quieter, more peaceful backyard and a more effortless pool ownership experience.

Are you planning to build your dream pool and find yourself torn between a traditional chlorine system and a saltwater pool? Or are you considering converting your current setup to a saltwater system? Either way, you’re not alone. Many pool owners face this decision, wondering, “Should I use chlorine or switch to a saltwater system?”

In this blog, we’ll dive deep into the pros and cons of saltwater pools to help you make an informed decision. But first, let’s clear up some common misconceptions about saltwater pools.

Dispelling Common Saltwater Pool Myths

Myth 1: Saltwater Pools Are Chlorine-Free.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that saltwater pools don’t use chlorine. While it’s true that saltwater pools differ from traditional chlorine systems, they do produce chlorine—just in a different way. Instead of adding chlorine directly, a saltwater pool uses a chlorine generator. This system works by adding pool-grade salt to the water, which the generator converts into chlorine through electrolysis. The result is a lower chlorine concentration than traditional pools, leading to softer water.

Myth 2: Saltwater Pools Are as Salty as the Ocean.

Another common myth is that saltwater pools are as salty as the ocean. This isn’t the case at all. Saltwater pools contain only about one-tenth the salinity of seawater. This lower salinity means the water is much gentler on your skin and eyes than swimming in the ocean.

What Is a Saltwater Generator?

The heart of a saltwater pool system is the salt-chlorine generator, which uses electrolysis to break down dissolved salt into hypochlorous acid and sodium hypochlorite—critical components in sanitizing your pool. Unlike traditional pools where chloramines (the compounds responsible for the strong chlorine smell) can build up, a saltwater generator continuously produces chlorine, keeping the water clean without the harsh odor.

Now that we’ve debunked some myths and explained how the system works let’s explore the pros and cons of owning a saltwater pool.

Pros of Saltwater Pools

1. Gentler on Skin, Eyes, and Hair

One of the most noticeable benefits of a saltwater pool is its gentleness on your body. The lower chlorine levels mean less skin irritation, no more red, stinging eyes, and hair that doesn’t get dried out or damaged after a swim. Plus, saltwater pools don’t fade your swimwear or towels like chlorine pools can, providing a sense of relief from common pool issues.

2. No Strong Chlorine Smell

For many people, the distinct chlorine smell of traditional pools is a significant drawback. Saltwater pools eliminate this issue, offering a more natural swimming experience without the chemical odor, fostering a sense of connection to nature.

3. Safer for Handling Chemicals

With a salt water system, you’re handling fewer harsh chemicals. Traditional chlorine pools require you to store and add chlorine regularly, which can be hazardous if not done correctly. Saltwater systems, on the other hand, produce chlorine as needed, reducing the need for frequent chemical handling.

4. Softer Water

The water in saltwater pools has a luxurious, soft feel, making for a more enjoyable swimming experience. This softness comes from the lower chlorine levels and the mild salinity, which is much less than that of seawater.

5. Lower Maintenance Requirements

Saltwater pools generally require less maintenance than traditional chlorine pools. The chlorine generator continuously sanitizes the water, meaning you don’t have to add chlorine manually. The system also helps prevent algae growth, so you won’t need to add algicide as often. However, you’ll still need to test your water regularly and add balancing chemicals as required.

6. Cost-Effective in the Long Run

While saltwater pools may have a higher upfront cost, they can be cheaper to maintain over time. Pool-grade salt is less expensive than chlorine, and since the system produces chlorine continuously, you’ll need fewer chemicals overall. This can lead to significant savings in the long run.

Cons of Saltwater Pools

1. Higher Initial Investment

The biggest downside to saltwater pools is the initial cost. Installing a saltwater system is more expensive than setting up a traditional chlorine pool. The price includes purchasing and installing the chlorine generator, which can be prohibitive for some. Additionally, the equipment may need replacement every three to ten years, adding to the overall cost.

2. Potential Corrosiveness

Salt can be corrosive, so it’s crucial to ensure that all your pool equipment and features are compatible with a saltwater system. This includes investing in a salt-friendly heat exchange for your pool heater, corrosion-resistant diving boards, and marine-grade stainless steel handrails to prevent rust. While most modern pool fixtures are designed to be salt-friendly, it’s still wise to consult with a pool professional when building or converting to a saltwater system.

3. Requires Professional Maintenance

While a saltwater pool requires less routine maintenance, when issues do arise, they often require professional attention. Repairs to the chlorine generator are not typically DIY-friendly, so you may need to factor in the cost of professional maintenance over time.

Final Thoughts on Saltwater Pools

Saltwater pools offer numerous benefits, making them an attractive option for many homeowners. They’re gentler on the skin, eyes, and hair, provide a more natural swimming experience, and can save you money on maintenance in the long run. However, they come with a higher initial investment and potential challenges related to salt’s corrosive nature.

A saltwater pool could be the perfect choice if you’re looking for a more comfortable, low-maintenance pool experience and are willing to invest upfront.

Whether you’re considering a saltwater pool or sticking with a traditional chlorine system, ensuring you have access to high-quality pool chemicals is essential. As the warmer months approach, getting your pool ready for summer becomes a top priority for pool owners. Ensuring your pool is clean, safe, and inviting requires some preparation and the right chemicals. This guide aims to simplify the pool maintenance process by highlighting every chemical you’ll need to prepare your pool for the season. From achieving the perfect water balance to keeping the water crystal clear, understanding the role of each chemical is vital to a hassle-free summer of fun.

Maintaining a pool is like a balancing act, where the right combination of chemicals ensures swimmers’ safety and extends your pool’s life. Regular upkeep using these chemicals can prevent common pool problems such as algae growth, cloudy water, and scale buildup. Whether you’re a seasoned pool owner or new to pool maintenance, this guide will give you the knowledge and confidence to keep your pool in top condition all summer.

Water Balance: pH, Alkalinity, and Calcium Hardness

Water balance is crucial in pool maintenance, carefully managing pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness. pH levels determine how acidic or alkaline your pool water is, with an ideal range between 7.2 and 7.6. This balance is for swimmer comfort and also to protect pool equipment from corrosion. Alkalinity, a pH buffer, should be maintained between 80 and 120 parts per million (ppm) to prevent wide pH fluctuations.

Calcium hardness, meanwhile, measures the amount of dissolved calcium in the water and should be kept between 200 and 400 ppm to protect pool surfaces and equipment. Managing these levels is a delicate dance that prevents scaling, cloudiness, and potential damage to the pool. Regular testing and adjustments with pH or decreasers, alkalinity increasers, and calcium hardness increasers are essential to achieving the perfect water balance.

Sanitizers

Sanitizers are the front line of defense against bacteria and pathogens that can thrive in pool water. Chlorine is the most widely used sanitizer because it kills bacteria and other harmful organisms. Maintaining chlorine levels between 1-3 ppm ensures water safety without irritating swimmers. For those looking for an alternative, bromine offers a softer approach. It remains stable at higher temperatures, ideal for hot tubs and spas. Regardless of the choice, regular monitoring and adjustment of sanitizer levels are essential for a clean and safe pool environment.

In addition to chlorine and bromine, there are other types of sanitizers available on the market, such as mineral sanitizers, saltwater systems, and ozone generators. Mineral sanitizers use natural minerals to control bacteria, while saltwater systems convert salt into chlorine through a process called electrolysis. Ozone generators produce ozone gas, which is a powerful oxidizer that effectively kills bacteria and viruses. Each type of sanitizer has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it’s important to do research and consult with a pool professional to determine the best option for your specific needs.

Algaecides

Algae can be a persistent and unsightly problem in pools. Still, with the right algaecides, it can be effectively managed and prevented. Algaecides are specifically formulated to target and kill algae spores, preventing them from taking hold and multiplying. Different algaecides are available, tailored to combat various algae types, including green, black, and mustard algae. Incorporating algaecides into your weekly pool maintenance schedule can significantly reduce the likelihood of algae blooms, keeping your pool water clear and inviting throughout the summer.

Clarifiers and Flocculants

Clarifiers and flocculants address the issue of cloudy water, which can be caused by tiny particles too small for the pool filter to catch. Clarifiers work by coagulating these particles into larger clusters that can be more easily filtered out, making them a great addition to your regular pool maintenance routine. Conversely, flocculants bind particles together and cause them to settle at the bottom of the pool, necessitating vacuuming to remove the debris. Depending on the severity of the cloudiness, choosing the right product can make all the difference in restoring your pool’s sparkle.

It’s important to note that while clarifiers and flocculants can help with cloudy water, they are not a substitute for proper filtration and regular cleaning. It’s still important to maintain the appropriate chemical balance in your pool and regularly clean your pool filter to ensure optimal water clarity. Additionally, it’s recommended to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully when adding clarifiers or flocculants to your pool. Overuse or misuse of these chemicals can lead to unintended consequences, so it’s important to use them as directed for the best results.

Stain and Scale Removers

Stains and scale in a pool are often the result of mineral imbalances, particularly from high levels of calcium or metals like iron and copper. These can deposit on pool surfaces and equipment, leading to unsightly stains and scaling that can be difficult to remove. Using stain and scale removers can dissolve these deposits, restoring the appearance of your pool and protecting its surfaces. Regular testing for metals and adjusting water chemistry can prevent these issues from arising, ensuring your pool remains clean and well-maintained.

Conclusion

Getting your pool ready for the summer is an essential task that ensures the safety and enjoyment of all swimmers. You can maintain a clean, safe, and inviting pool environment by understanding and utilizing the various chemicals discussed, from pH balancers to sanitizers and algaecides. Regular testing and maintenance are vital to preventing common pool problems and ensuring your pool remains a source of joy and relaxation throughout the summer.

Remember, pool maintenance is an ongoing process, and staying proactive with your pool’s chemical balance can significantly reduce the need for emergency treatments. Embrace the coming warm months with confidence, knowing your pool is prepared for endless summer fun. With the proper care and attention, your pool can be the highlight of your summer, providing a refreshing and delightful retreat for friends and family.

Grand Rapids, MI – Haviland Enterprises, Inc. is commemorating its 90th anniversary as a premier supplier of chemicals for cleaning, water treatment, plating, and recreational water solutions. Since its founding in 1934 by chemist J.B. Haviland, the company has evolved from a modest laboratory in Michigan to a globally recognized chemical manufacturer with facilities across the United States.

For 90 years Haviland has been delivering innovative chemical solutions tailored to meet the evolving needs of its customers. “Our drive to exceed expectations is fueled by our commitment to our customers and our community,” said Meg Post, Haviland Enterprises, Inc. President and CEO. “As a 100% employee-owned company, our employees are deeply invested in ensuring the highest level of service and product excellence. We are excited to continue delivering value that not only meets but anticipates the needs of our customers.”

Post attributes Haviland’s success to its Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), which was initiated by the Haviland family in 1997. The company first transitioned to a partial ESOP with 54% ownership retained by the Haviland family and 46% by employees. In 2012, the family transferred its remaining shares to the ESOP, making Haviland fully employee-owned. “The ESOP empowers our workforce, encouraging a culture of ownership and continuous improvement at all levels of the organization,” added Post.

Coinciding with its anniversary milestone, Haviland is constructing a new $7 million flagship laboratory, envisioned as a hub for product development and innovation. “This investment reflects Haviland’s enduring commitment to technical excellence and innovation, key principles that have been integral to the company’s operations since our beginning,” said Rob Pawson, Vice President of Haviland Products Company.

Haviland’s 90th anniversary will be officially commemorated at its Annual Shareholders’ Meeting in June, marking a significant occasion to celebrate the company’s legacy and its ongoing efforts to develop innovative chemical solutions in new and existing markets.

“As we look to the future, our mission remains the same. Haviland will continue to create chemical solutions that solve our customers’ challenges,” said Post. “Providing solutions and building partnerships is in our DNA, and I’m excited to leverage this expertise in both emerging and established markets.”
