The Evolution of Luxury: Adding a Spa to the Swimming Pool

Published

on

For many, the idea of a swimming pool conjures up images of sun-drenched summer days, refreshing dips, and backyard gatherings. Yet, for those who seek a little more luxury, adding a spa or hot tub to a pool transforms a simple swimming experience into a full-fledged oasis of relaxation and wellness. But how did the practice of combining spas with swimming pools first begin?

Origins of Spas and Hot Tubs

Ancient Beginnings

The concept of soaking in warm water for relaxation and therapeutic benefits is far from new. Ancient civilizations were well aware of the restorative powers of hot water, and they sought out natural hot springs as a source of healing. The Romans, in particular, were pioneers in the use of communal baths, or “thermae,” which were elaborate facilities featuring hot, warm, and cold baths. These baths were not merely places to cleanse the body but also served as social hubs where citizens gathered to relax, discuss politics, and engage in leisure activities.

Similarly, the Greeks and Japanese also utilized hot springs for their health benefits. In Japan, the practice of “onsen,” or bathing in hot springs, has been a cultural tradition for centuries. These natural hot springs were celebrated for their mineral-rich waters, believed to cure various ailments. The practice of soaking in hot water became deeply embedded in these cultures, laying the foundation for the modern spa experience.

Early Artificial Spas

While natural hot springs were revered, the desire to replicate this experience in more controlled environments led to the development of artificial spas. The 20th century saw significant advancements in plumbing and heating technologies, allowing for the creation of heated baths in homes and public facilities. By the mid-20th century, the concept of a spa had evolved from communal bathing to private, intimate experiences, often enjoyed within the comfort of one’s own home.

The Rise of Residential Pools

The Post-War Suburban Boom

The mid-20th century marked a significant shift in the way people viewed and used their outdoor spaces. Following World War II, there was a substantial increase in homeownership in the United States, spurred by economic prosperity and the development of suburban neighborhoods. With larger yards and a focus on family-oriented leisure activities, swimming pools became a sought-after feature for many homeowners.

Initially, private swimming pools were symbols of status, reserved for the affluent. However, as construction techniques improved and costs decreased, pools became more accessible to the middle class. By the 1960s, backyard pools were increasingly common in suburban neighborhoods, serving as focal points for family fun and social gatherings.

The Desire for Luxury and Relaxation

As the popularity of swimming pools grew, so did the desire for additional features that could enhance the pool experience. Homeowners began to seek ways to make their pools more luxurious and multifunctional. Diving boards, waterfalls, and elaborate landscaping were among the first enhancements, but it wasn’t long before the idea of integrating a spa into the pool area emerged as a trend.

When Spas Began Being Added to Pools

The 1960s and 1970s: The Birth of Pool-Spas

The concept of adding a spa to a swimming pool began to take shape in the 1960s and 1970s. During this period, there was a growing interest in wellness and relaxation, fueled by the counterculture movements of the 1960s and the burgeoning health trends of the 1970s. People were increasingly aware of the benefits of hydrotherapy, and the idea of having a personal spa at home became appealing.

One of the key developments during this time was the advent of fiberglass and gunite as materials for pool and spa construction. Fiberglass, a lightweight and durable material, made it easier to create custom shapes and designs. Gunite, a mixture of cement, sand, and water applied through a high-pressure hose, allowed for the construction of durable, versatile pools and spas. These materials revolutionized the industry, making it feasible to integrate spas directly into swimming pools.

Technological Advances

The integration of spas into swimming pools was also made possible by advancements in water heating technology. Early spas were often standalone units, separate from the pool, and required their own heating systems. However, as heating technology improved, it became easier to design pools with adjacent or integrated spas that could share the same water and heating systems. This innovation reduced costs and simplified maintenance, making pool-spa combinations more attractive to homeowners.

The first early innovators in the hot tub industry were pioneers instrumental in popularizing modern hot tubs and creating the market for spas:

Jacuzzi Brothers: In the 1950s, the Italian-American Jacuzzi brothers initially designed hydrotherapy pumps for medical use in hospitals. Later, Roy Jacuzzi expanded this idea and, in 1968, introduced the first self-contained whirlpool bath, known as the “Roman.” This innovation integrated jets with a 50/50 air-to-water ratio, marking the beginning of luxury hydrotherapy in private homes.

Watkins Brothers: Jon and Jeff Watkins are credited with building the first self-contained, insulated portable spa in the 1970s. Working out of their garage, they developed a portable solution that transformed the spa industry by making hot tubs more accessible and easier to install, which fueled the product’s growing popularity.

The Influence of the Leisure and Hospitality Industry

The Resort and Hotel Influence

While the trend of adding spas to residential pools was gaining momentum, it was also heavily influenced by the leisure and hospitality industry. Resorts and hotels were among the first to recognize the appeal of combining swimming pools with spas. In the 1970s and 1980s, luxury resorts began to feature pools with integrated spas, offering guests a unique experience that combined the relaxation of a spa with the enjoyment of swimming.

These resort-style pool-spa combinations quickly became popular with homeowners who wanted to recreate the vacation experience in their own backyards. The idea of a pool with an adjacent or integrated spa became synonymous with luxury and leisure, and it wasn’t long before this trend made its way into residential design.

Hollywood and Celebrity Influence

Another significant factor in the rise of pool-spa combinations was the influence of Hollywood and celebrity culture. In the 1980s, the opulent lifestyles of celebrities were often showcased in movies, television shows, and magazines. The glamorous images of stars lounging by their pools, complete with luxurious spas, helped cement the idea that a pool with a spa was a symbol of success and indulgence. This cultural influence further propelled the popularity of pool-spa combinations among the general public.

Design Innovations and Trends

Integrated vs. Separate Spa Designs

As the demand for pool-spa combinations grew, so did the variety of design options. One of the earliest and most popular designs was the integrated spillover spa, where the spa is built directly into the pool structure, often elevated slightly above the pool level. Water from the spa would overflow into the pool, creating a visually appealing waterfall effect.

Another design trend was the separate adjacent spa, where the spa is built next to the pool but is not directly connected to it. This design allows for more flexibility in water temperature and usage, as the spa can be heated independently from the pool. Both designs offered unique benefits and appealed to different preferences, contributing to the diversity of pool-spa combinations available.

Aesthetic and Functional Trends

Over time, pool-spa designs continued to evolve, with a focus on both aesthetics and functionality. In the 1990s and 2000s, there was a shift towards more naturalistic designs, inspired by the desire to create backyard spaces that felt like tranquil retreats. Spas began to feature natural stone finishes, custom shapes, and integrated water features such as spillways and jets.

Infinity edges, where the water flows over one or more edges of the pool or spa, creating a visual effect of water with no boundary, became a popular design element in luxury pool-spa combinations. This trend was particularly popular in homes with scenic views, as it enhanced the feeling of being immersed in the landscape.

Current Trends and Future Directions

Technological Integration

In recent years, the integration of smart technology into pool and spa design has opened up new possibilities for convenience and customization. Automated controls allow homeowners to adjust the temperature, lighting, and jets of their spa from their smartphones or tablets. Energy-efficient heating systems and LED lighting have also become standard features, enhancing the overall experience while reducing energy consumption.

Advances in materials and construction techniques continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in pool-spa design. Customization options are now more diverse than ever, with homeowners able to choose from a wide range of materials, shapes, and finishes to create a pool-spa combination that perfectly suits their lifestyle and aesthetic preferences.

Health and Wellness

As the focus on health and wellness continues to grow, the popularity of pool-spa combinations shows no signs of waning. Spas are increasingly being designed with hydrotherapy in mind, featuring therapeutic jets, ergonomic seating, and other features that promote relaxation and physical well-being. The benefits of hydrotherapy, including improved circulation, pain relief, and stress reduction, are driving the continued demand for spa-equipped pools.

Looking ahead, it is likely that the trend of integrating spas into swimming pools will continue to evolve in response to new technologies, materials, and design philosophies. As more people seek to create personal wellness retreats in their own backyards, the pool-spa combination will remain a desirable feature, offering a perfect blend of luxury, relaxation, and health benefits.

The journey began in 2000, when Marquis granted its first wish for Andrea, a 15-year-old leukemia survivor. Today, Andrea is cancer-free and raising a family of her own. This is about showing up for families when it matters most, and it’s part of what makes the Marquis retail network so special.”

While not the only hot tub manufacturer to partner with Make-A-Wish, the Marquis program stands out as a model for sustained commitment. Marquis dealers often develop long-term connections with wish families and fellow volunteers, while also benefiting from positive recognition and shared pride in making wishes come true.

As Marquis reflects on this 25-year legacy, the company continues to prioritize loyal partnerships, especially with retailers who share its values. “Joining the Marquis network means more than selling premium spas,” said Todd Shannon, Chief Revenue Officer. “It means being part of a brand that delivers lasting enjoyment, builds community trust, and demonstrates leadership through action.”

Josh Cowley, CEO of parent company May Manufacturing, is equally committed. “We believe that every wish granted reflects the heart of our company and our dealer network,” said Cowley. “We’re excited to continue this legacy and invite retailers who share our values to join Marquis in making an even broader impact in the years ahead.”
