Getting Maximum Benefit from Your Inground Pool LED Lighting

The COVID-19 pandemic forced a majority of homeowners to upgrade their pools and backyards. I mean, everyone was looking for an escapade amid all COVID-19 travel restrictions. Fortunately, the expansion of the pool industry led to numerous water feature inventions. So, homeowners often have many options to choose from when renovating their pools. At present, LED lights are one of the most popular features you can incorporate in your pool. Inground pool LED lighting not only boost your pool’s aesthetics but also offer excellent functionality. Not to mention, LED pool lighting is energy-saving and budget-friendly. Sadly, not all pool owners know how to make the most out of their LED pool lights. In this article, we discuss some of the ways you can get maximum benefits from your inground pool LED lighting.

Getting Maximum Benefit from Your Inground Pool LED Lighting

Tips for designing inground pools with led lighting

First, keep in mind that lighting underwater environments is not the same as lighting aboveground environments. When designing your pool with LED lights, below are a few things to consider:

  • Ensure the pool LED lights accentuate all your water features.
  • The LED pool lights should produce ambient lighting in the pool and the surrounding area.
  • The pool lights should help you navigate the pool with ease at night.
  • Consider the design and size of the pool before purchasing LED pool lights.
  • Choose multi-colored LED pool lights for better aesthetics.
  • Make sure your pool LED lights illuminate the whole pool.

Factors to consider before purchasing inground pool LED lighting

Texture and color of the pool

Before you install inground pool LED lighting, consider your pool color and texture. Pool color often affects the quality of the pool lights. For instance, lighter pools tend to reflect light, while darker pools take in more light. Therefore, in dark pools, you will need more LED pool lights. Also, consider installing brighter LED lights in darker pools.

The color of pool LED lights

Always consider the pool light color before installing them. The color of the inground pool LED lighting affects the quality of light in the pool. Blue pool lights, for instance, tend to appear brighter compared to other pool light colors. Pool professionals often recommend going for a pool light color that produces more brightness. Even better, install color-changing LED lights. Consequently, you get to experience a wide array of colors.

Where should I position my pool LED lights?

All pool owners should position their pool lights accordingly. However, pool light position depends on the type and number of pool lights being used.

Single Lights

Pool owners with small pools often use a single light. Single lights work best when placed at a focal point in the pool.

Opposing Lights

If you have a long pool, use multiple pool lights. Place these lights on opposite sides of the pool for uniform illumination. Doing this also prevents the occurrence of shadows in the pool hence improving swimming visibility.

Extra-long pools

For extremely long pools, use multiple lights on one end of the pool (use the side that faces away from the property). Space each light at equal intervals for maximum illumination. Experts recommend placing each light at every 8ft and 4ft from the pool’s end.

Pool Swim-Outs and ledges

Position the lights opposite ledges and swim-outs for proper pool lighting. If you have compact size lights, you can place them over the pool steps or ledge to increase brightness and safety.

Pool entry steps

Most pools have pool entry steps. Thus, avoid placing the pool lights at opposite ends. Instead, place the lights on the longest side of the pool that’s nearest to the house. This helps you boost safety around the entry/exit area of the pool and reduce shadows.

Irregular & L-shape pools

When it comes to irregular pools, place multiple lights on all sections of the irregular pool. Treat each section of the pool separately.

Small freeform pools

Creating uniform illumination for small freeform pools requires you to place the pool lights from opposite sides of the pool.

Bigger freeform pools

Bigger freeform pools do not work well with lights placed at opposing ends of the pool. In most instances, the shape of the freeform pool determines how you’ll position the pool lights. For example, if the freeform pool has more inward curves, lights should be further apart for maximum illumination. With large freeform pools, compact lights will work better.

Pool lighting is increasingly becoming popular due to its unique functionality and aesthetics. Installing pool lights transforms your backyard into a radiant oasis. However, it is important to know how to position your pool lights to experience all the amazing benefits they offer. Generally, inground pool LED lighting is energy-saving, safe, and functional. So, before you purchase LED lighting, ensure it meets all these aspects.

Moreover, you have to consider several factors before installation. Always evaluate the color of the LED lights and the design of the pool. This way, you’ll be able to receive maximum and efficient illumination from your pool lights.
